The Bay's most liveable town.

Tivat sits at the narrowest point of the Bay of Kotor, where the mountains pull back just enough to let the sun in. For most of the 20th century it was home to the Yugoslav Navy's main arsenal — a vast industrial compound on the waterfront that most towns would have torn down.

Instead, it was transformed into Porto Montenegro: a 24-hectare luxury superyacht marina with restaurants, boutiques, a Naval Heritage Collection museum, and berths for vessels up to 250 metres. The Cold War submarine is still there, now a museum exhibit. It's an unlikely combination that somehow works.

Beyond the marina, Tivat is an ordinary Montenegrin coastal town with a tree-lined promenade, a handful of good seafood restaurants, and a relaxed pace that Kotor — 20 minutes away — rarely manages in high season. Tivat Airport (TIV) sits 5 minutes from the centre, making it the easiest entry point to the entire bay.

If you're flying into TIV and heading to Kotor, don't bother with a taxi. The local bus runs directly from the airport stop to Kotor for under €3 — same road, far cheaper. Ask the driver to confirm before boarding.

Best time to visit Tivat.

Tivat gets more sunshine than any other town in the Bay of Kotor — but the tourist season follows the same rhythm as the rest of the coast.

Spring Apr – May
Excellent

Warm and uncrowded. Porto Montenegro starts filling up but the town is calm. Great for cycling along the promenade and day trips around the bay. Temperatures 18–24°C.

Summer Jun – Aug
Peak season

The marina fills with superyachts, the beach bars open late, and prices rise sharply. Book accommodation 2–3 months ahead. Temperatures 28–34°C. Busy but energetic.

Autumn Sep – Oct
Excellent

Our favourite time. Sea stays warm into October, crowds drop after the first week of September, and the light on the bay is extraordinary. Prices fall 30–40% from peak.

Winter Nov – Mar
Quiet

Most marina restaurants close. The town is very local and very peaceful. Mild by Adriatic standards — rarely below 8°C. Good for long walks and cheap apartments.
