Small country.
Big impression.
13,812 km² of mountains, medieval towns and Adriatic coastline. Montenegro packs more variety into a small space than almost anywhere in Europe — and it's still delightfully uncrowded.

What makes it worth the trip.
Montenegro declared independence in 2006 and has been quietly building itself into one of Europe's most interesting travel destinations ever since. It adopted the euro without being in the eurozone, which makes it refreshingly easy for visitors.
The geography is the real draw. In a single day you can have coffee in a 2,000-year-old walled city, swim in crystal-clear Adriatic water, and be hiking through a national park with peaks over 2,500 metres. No other country this size offers this much contrast.
Food is honest and generous: fresh seafood on the coast, smoked prosciutto and cheese from the mountain villages of Njeguši, and locally-produced Vranac red wine that punches far above its price point.
Getting around
Buses connect all major towns. No rail on the coast — bus or car is the only option. Tivat airport is 20 min from Kotor, Podgorica airport is 1.5h.
Language
Montenegrin (virtually identical to Serbian). English is widely spoken in tourist areas on the coast. Italian also useful in Kotor and Herceg Novi.
Safety
Very safe for tourists. Low crime, friendly locals. Standard urban precautions apply in Podgorica — otherwise relaxed throughout the country.
Budget
Cheaper than Western Europe, pricier than Eastern Europe. Kotor and Budva peak in July–August. Shoulder season (May, Sept–Oct) offers best value.
